Frequently Asked Questions

Total Hip Replacement Procedure

The operation takes around 90 minutes, during which the patient is put under either spinal or general anaesthesia and receives a femoral nerve block to relieve pain during and after the surgery.

Total Shoulder Replacement Procedure

A total shoulder replacement procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia (in addition a regional anaesthetic and/or nerve block may also be used) and generally takes around 90 minutes.

Total Knee Replacement Procedure

A total knee replacement procedure, as the name implies, involves the replacement of the entire knee joint with an artificial joint, or ‘prosthesis’. It takes around 90 minutes and is conducted under general anaesthetic or an epidural (spinal) anaesthetic.

Revision Knee, Hip, Shoulder Replacement

There are many different revision surgery procedures. A great deal depends on which joint is causing trouble. Most joint replacements involve two or three components, and when a revision is required, in most cases, only one implant or component of the prosthesis needs attention.
